Detoxify your home.
Welcome to the class on how to detoxify your home. We live in a time when people are becoming more and more concerned about the environment, what they eat, how much sleep they need, how to reduce stress, and so on. Lots of people are seeking better health solutions so they can live better lives. For the most part, we are all seeking better health through nutrition and exercise and we'll go to great lengths to avoid eating foods that are harmful to our health. Sadly, while a lot of attention has been placed on what we put in our bodies, not much attention has been given to what we put on our bodies or what we use in our homes.

This presentation has not been evaluated by the FDA and is intended for educational and entertainment purposes only. Did you know that at least one person dies every 19 minutes from something that has been approved by the FDA?! This class is not intended to prescribe, diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. It is your responsibility to educate yourself and address any health need you may have with your physician. Thank you!
The Toxic Ten
1. Deodorant/Antiperspirant
Conventional deodorants and antiperspirants usually contain ingredients that may cause cells to mutate which can cause problems. These products are designed to remain on our bodies for hours, which increases the absorption of the chemicals through the skin. This doesn't even take into account the aluminum in most commercial antiperspirants. Now there is great scientific controversy over what this means but there has been research that has shown a link between aluminum and challenges with proper brain function.

2. Toothpastes
Some of the ingredients in toothpaste have been linked to cell mutations. Fluoride is one of the biggest contributors towards this. Fluoride is one of the most toxic chemicals known so it doesn't make much sense to be putting this into your mouth where it can be absorbed by the lining in your mouth. There have been studies that have been done which have shown a link between children who live in areas with high fluoridated water and having "significantly lower" IQ scores than children who live in low fluoride areas. Also if you read most toothpaste tubes they state to call the poison control center if the toothpaste is swallowed.

3. Laundry Detergent and Softener
The dryer vent is a curious situation. Emissions from dryer vents are basically unregulated. Emissions coming out of a smokestack or tailpipe are but not out of a dryer vent.

4. Perfumes/Synthetic Fragrances
The list of people who absolutely can "not" tolerate synthetic fragrances is growing all the time. Man made chemicals are in perfume and cologne and many of these chemicals can cause problems with how our body is supposed to properly function. Whatever you put on the skin is quickly absorbed by the skin.

5. Over The Counter Preparations
Any product with man made chemicals can cause problems because these chemicals can build up in the body because often times the pathways of elimination are compromised, especially the older we get. One athlete who had been using BenGay died due to the buildup of the synthetic chemicals. The chemicals became too much and overwhelmed the body.

6. Candles and Air Fresheners
There's nothing like a candle to set the mood. But most candles sold today emit chemicals like benzene and touluene which are linked to cell mutations. Other chemicals such as hydrocarbons like alkanes and alkenes can irritate our respiratory system These chemicals are the same that come out of car tailpipes.

A study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission showed that 40% of the candles sold contain lead wires inside their wicks. Scented candles usually contain lead wicks. Fragrance oils soften the wax and the manufacturers add lead to make the wicks firm. These candles can release five times the amount of lead confirmed as hazardous for children and they are far beyond the pollution standards for outdoor air which has been set by the Environmental Protection Agency. Exposure to large amounts of lead can lead to hormone disruption, behavioral problems, learning disabilities, and other health problems.

A study by the Natural Resources Defense Council involved 13 common air fresheners and scientists found that most of them contain chemicals that aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development.

In 2008, Anne Steinemann at the University of Washington conducted a study and found that air fresheners she tested were loaded with toxic and hazardous chemicals. Some of these chemicals can lead to cell mutations and are absolutely dangerous. Essential oils can provide pleasing scents for your environment without you having to worry about problems from synthetic chemicals. Essential oils are health-friendly.

7. Mold
In studies that have been done they have shown that as many as 50% of homes in the United State have a mold problem. There are many many health problems that can result from mold including death. The only thing that has been proven to safely eliminate mold from homes and buildings is using our Thieves cleaner and diffusing our Thieves essential oil. For one family a $10,000 mold problem was resolved for about $350 with Thieves.

8. Plastics (Shower Curtains, Water Bottles, Toys, etc.)
Depending on the type of plastic, many of these emit volatile organic chemicals which can cause many problems. Also they can contain chemicals that disrupt proper hormone functioning in the body.

9. Water
Remember when we talked about toxins absorbed through the skin or mucous membranes from drinking water, showers, bathing, or swimming? Chemical additives such as chlorine or fluoride are poisons - yes - they are - just ask any chemistry professor. This doesn't even include the residues of prescription drugs, pesticides, artificial fertilizers, and other chemicals from crop run-off, or chemicals from fracking that turn up in our water which can cause many problems.

10. Household Cleaners
Many chemicals in cleaners don't even have to be labeled! Household cleaners, bleach, and ammonia are some of the most toxic substances you can get your hands on or breathe in. Many people don't have a well ventilated bathroom. Many researchers feel that why many stay-at-home moms seem to have a higher incidence of certain health problems compared to women who work outside of the home has to do with all the chemicals in cleaners.

What is Green Washing?
What about all those "Green" cleaners?

Many people have grown tired of putting their health in jeopardy just to clean their bathrooms, bedrooms, or kitchen. It is very obvious why green cleaners have such an appeal and why people want to use them.

The household cleaning industry has caught on to this and responded in full force with product lines that claim they are green and natural.

These products are labeled "green" and "natural" for marketing reasons and to charge 20-30% more.

They usually contain the same amount of chemicals!

This is a practice called "green washing" - misleading marketing to make products appear green and healthy.

For example, arsenic, uranium, mercury, and formaldehyde are all naturally occurring and poisonous. "All natural" and "green" aren't necessarily nontoxic. It is hard to tell what exactly is in your cleaning products under the Federal Hazardous Substance Act!
Skin: Your Largest Organ
The American Academy of Dermatology states that our skin is our body's largest organ. It serves a number of purposes. Mainly, to function as a barrier to protect the body from the outside world. Our skin serves as our first line of defense and works closely with our immune, digestive, circulatory, nervous, and detoxification systems. The skin works with these body systems to maintain and support the conditions that our cells, tissues, and organs need to function properly.

Because the skin is our body's largest organ, what we put on it and come in contact with gets absorbed into our bloodstream and is integrated into our body.

The skin is not a coat of armor on our body. Of course it protects our body but it is highly permeable.

Our skin is also our body's thinnest organ. Only 1/10th of an inch separates our delicate organs from all sorts of toxins, many of which have estrogen-mimicking effects that can destroy all our good health intentions.

If you can't eat it, do you want to put it on your skin? Many medicines are in fact delivered through the skin, demonstrating without a doubt that we absorb what we wear.
What are your cleaning and personal care products made out of?
We expect our products to do what they say they are going to do, but do we know what they are made out of? Unlike foods and beverages, cleaning and many personal care products are not required by law to carry a list of ingredients. We are going to take a look at some of the most common ingredients used in these products and the possible dangers they pose.

The typical American home contains 3-10 gallons of toxic household cleaning materials that can cause respiratory problems, eye irritation, endocrine system disruption, and even cancer.

Children are especially vulnerable to toxins because they have a higher metabolism and their immune systems are still immature.

It is important to educate yourself and to find out what toxins you are regularly exposed to, ways you can limit or reduce exposure, and what products to use that are safe and effective alternatives.

According to the FDA, "triclosan is an ingredient added to many consumer products to reduce or prevent bacterial contamination." The EPA classifies triclosan as a pesticide. In fact, the EPA gives triclosan high scores both as a human health risk and as an environmental risk.

The FDA states that scientific animal studies have shown that triclosan alters hormone regulation. Other studies on bacteria have raised the possibility that triclosan contributes to making bacteria resistant to antibiotics.
Parabens are used as a preservative and aren't always labeled. Companies use parabens as an inexpensive way to make their products last longer while preventing bacterial growth.

A study done by the journal of Applied Toxicology detected high amounts of parabens in breast cancer cell growth. Parabens are able to bind to estrogen receptors, where they encourage breast cancer cell growth. Parabens mimic natural estrogen that can then lead to cancer.

Parabens may contribute to sterility in males, hormone imbalances in females, and early puberty.

When you hear "endocrine disruptors" don't be quick to dismiss it. The endocrine system in your body is so much more than "hot flashes" or "hormones". It is your body's communication system. NOTHING happens without it. And NOTHING goes well when it is disrupted.

Check your shampoos, soaps, make up, and deodorants for this ingredient.
The CDC website states "Phthalates are a group of chemicals used to make plastics more flexible and harder to break. They are often called plasticizers. Some phthalates are used as solvents (dissolving agents) for other materials. They are used in hundreds of products such as vinyl flooring, adhesives, detergents, lubricating oils, automotive plastics, plastic clothes (raincoats), and personal-care products (soaps, shampoos, hair sprays, and nail polishes).

In the past several years research mainly led by Earl Gray's laboratory at the US Environmental Protection Agency, has been looking at low-dose toxicity of phthalates during crucial windows of fetal development. As these studies have advanced, they have fundamentally changed our perception of potential health risks of phthalates.

"Fragrance" is basically a secret mixture of chemicals. Companies are not required to list these chemicals on product labels because it is "proprietary."

Toluene, which is in fragrances, is a known neurotoxin that can cause loss of muscle control, brain damage, headaches, memory loss, and speech, hearing, and vision problems.

Compare this to essential oils! Many people who are severely sensitive to "fragrances" are not negatively affected by essential oils. This is because essential oils (Young Living's) are pure and created by God. Fragrances are synthetic and created by man and that is where the problems come from - man-made.

Another chemical that can be in "fragrance" is 1,4-dioxane, also known as dioxane, is a byproduct rather than an ingredient and is therefore not listed on any label. However, it's been found to be toxic to your brain, central nervous system, kidneys, liver, and respiratory system and two thirds of laundry detergents contain it.

The Consumer Product Safety Commisson, which regulates cleaning supplies, air fresheners, and laundry products, currently does not require manufacturers to disclose any ingredients on the label, including fragrances, in these products. The same is true for fragrances in personal care items, which are overseen by the Food and Drug Administration.
Sodium lauryl sulfate is a surfactant, detergent, and emulsifier used in thousands of cosmetic products, as well as in industrial cleaners. It is present in nearly all shampoos, scalp treatments, hair color and bleaching agents, toothpastes, body washes and cleansers, make-up foundations, liquid hand soaps, laundry detergents, and bath oils/bath salts. Although SLS originates from coconuts, the chemical is anything but natural. The real problem with SLES/SLS is that the manufacturing process results in SLES/SLS being contaminated with 1,4 dioxane, a carcinogenic by-product.

SLS is the sodium salt of lauryl sulfate, and is classified by the EWG Cosmetics Datebase as a moderate hazard.
The dangers of SLS alone have been documented in at least 16,000 studies.

According to these studies they have shown links to:
* Irritation of the skin and eyes
* Organ toxicity
* Developmental/reproductive toxicity
* Neurotixicity, endocrine disruption, ecotoxicology, and biochemical cellular changes
* Possible mutations and cancer
Propylene Glycol is used to keep deodorant from drying out. It is the main ingredient in antifreeze.

The EPA considers Propylene Glycol so toxic that they require gloves and goggles when disposing of and burying it.

It is amazing that all these toxins and chemicals, and many more that were not listed, are present in products that are designed to protect us.

The European government has banned over 1,200 more chemicals than the U.S. Under Federal Hazardous Substances Act, household cleaners are the only household products for which manufacturers are NOT required to list all ingredients.

The power that large companies have through well-funded government lobbying efforts, have allowed them to avoid legislation, often hiding behind the principle of "trade secrets."

Most people assume the government oversees the multibillion-dollar household cleaning products industry, but the reality is that it is largely unregulated.

According to the EPA, of the nearly 3,000 top selling chemicals in the U.S., only 7% have a full set of basic toxicity information. For the most part, the EPA simply relies on voluntary testing agreements with major manufacturers.

Without full disclosure, YOU can unknowingly expose yourself, your children, and your pets to unhealthy chemicals.

We must take responsibility for what we buy and use and we must educate ourselves.
OK, let's talk solutions. Thankfully we live in an age when knowledge has never been more accessible. For each of "Nature's Nine" we'll give you a great home-craft recipe for making your own products, as well as off-the-shelf options that contain NONE of the Toxic Ten, and are free from the synthetic chemicals hidden in many of the "ecobrands".

Best of all, you don't have to spend a fortune protecting your family from these toxins. Most of these solutions are actually far "cheaper" per use than what you are using right now.

Making laundry soap can be quite a chore.

Natural enzymes and powerful essential oils add to the formula's strength to leave your clothes fresh and clean with a light citrus scent. Recipe (in washer) Softener Crystals:
* 2 cups of Epsom salt or course sea salt
* 20-30 drops of your favorite essential oil or blend, I like lemon, lavender, or Stress Away
* 1/2 cup baking soda

Sir in the essential oil before mixing in 1/2 cup of baking soda (alternately, you can leave out the baking soda, and add it separately, which also works well.) Be sure to store it in an air-tight jar as essential oils evaporate at room temperature.

Use 2-3 tablespoons and toss in with your clothes before rinsing. If using the baking soda separately, add half a cup to each load.

Felted Wool Dryer Balls
You place the felted balls into your clothes dryer with your clothes. Because the wool is all natural you are helping to cut the exposure of chemicals for you and your family.

Scent the balls by adding several drops of your favorite scented oil. Copaiba, lavender, and Stress Away are great options and the scent lasts through 6-8 drying cycles! Just add the oil, let dry, and enjoy the scent on your clothes.

The felted balls are 100% wool and are completely dry so they help to pull moisture out of your clothes faster than the dryer would do on its own. This cuts the drying time down, which saves you money on the electricity your dryer normally would use.

The moisture from the wool balls redistributes back into the dryer. This reduces wrinkles and helps reduce static electricity, eliminating your need to add dryer sheets to each load.

The bouncing around of the dryer balls also acts as a natural fabric softener, so you don't need to add fabric softener during your washing cycle.

Felted Dryer Balls have a very long life span. Some people have reported using the same balls for 8 years and counting.
